The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 you strive in various ways. 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
