The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the declining star, 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
