Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
