The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
