Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
