AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot, 61 He said: verily ye are a people stranger. 62 They said: "Nay, we have come to you with that (torment) which they have been doubting. 63 We have come to thee with the truth, and assuredly we speak truly. 64 Go, then, with thy household while it is yet night, with thyself following them in the rear; and let none of you look back, but proceed whither you are bidden." 65 And We made known this decree to him, that the root of those (sinners) was to be cut off in the early morning. 66 And the people of the city came [unto Lot,] rejoicing at the glad tiding. 67 He said: Surely these are my guests, therefore do not disgrace me, 68 "And fear Allah and disgrace me not." 69 They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?" 70 He said, “These women of our tribe are my daughters, if you have to.” 71 By your life, they wandered on in their wild intoxication 72 So the shriek seized them at sunrise. 73 And We made the upside there of downwards, and We rained on them stones of baked clay. 74 Verily therein are signs for men of sagacity. 75 This (city) lies on a road that still survives. 76 Surely, in that there is a sign for those who believe. 77 And the dwellers in the wood [i.e. the people of Madyan (Midian) to whom Prophet Shu'aib was sent by Allah), were also Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). 78 and so We inflicted Our retribution on them. And behold, both these [sinful communities] lived by a highway, [to this day] plain to see 79
