Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
