The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. THESE ARE MESSAGES of revelation - of a discourse clear in itself and clearly showing the truth. 1 Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered: 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy life and let false hopes amuse them. They will soon come to know. 3 Never a city have We destroyed, but it had a known decree, 4 Neither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 And they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! thou art indeed a madman! 6 Why bringest thou not angels unto us, if thou art of the truthful? 7 We do not send down the angels (in frivolity); and when We do send them down, We do so with Truth; then people are granted no respite. 8 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. 9 And certainly We sent (apostles) before you among the nations of yore. 10 And whenever a Messenger came to them, they never failed to mock him. 11 Even so We make a way for it (that is, the Admonition) in the hearts of the culprits (like a hot rod); 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein, 14 yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!' 15
