A throng of the ancients 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
