The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 And the day resplendent 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
