The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the sun and its light 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 The heavens and its architecture, 5 And [by] the earth and He who spread it 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
