a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin of disbelief. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers - 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "In fact, we were unfortunate!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
