Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
