The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 thy robes purify 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
