The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
