Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
