A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
