The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
