In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Kaf Ha Ya Ain Suad. 1 AN ACCOUNT of the grace which thy Sustainer bestowed upon His servant Zachariah: 2 when he called upon his Lord in secret, 3 He said: O my Lord! verily the bones of me have waxen feeble, and the head is glistening with hoariness, and have not yet been in my prayer to thee, my Lord, unblest. 4 And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" 8 (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' 9 [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." 10 So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' 11 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom even as a youth, 12 as well as, by Our grace, [the gift of] compassion and purity; and he was [always] conscious of Us 13 And was good to his parents and not forceful, nor disobedient. 14 Hence, [God's] peace was upon him on the day when he was born, and on the day of his death, and will be [upon him] on the day when he shall be raised to life [again]. 15
