۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these idols to which you cling so passionately?" 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them". 53 He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error." 54 They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?" 55 He said: Nay! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence, and I am of those who bear witness to this: 56 And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. 57 He broke them all into pieces, except for the biggest one of them, so that they might return to it [for enquiry]. 58 They said: "Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers." 59 They said: We heard a youth called Ibrahim speak of them. 60 They said: 'Then bring him here so that the people may see, so that they may bear witness' 61 They said: "Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)?" 62 He said: "Nay, this was done by - this is their biggest one! ask them, if they can speak intelligently!" 63 Then they turned to one another and said, "It is you yourselves who are in the wrong," 64 Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!" 65 Abraham said: "Do you, then, worship beside Allah a thing that can neither benefit you nor hurt you? 66 "Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?" 67 They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act." 68 We said: "O fire, become coolness and safety for Abraham." 69 And they intended to do him an evil, but We made them the worst losers. 70 And We delivered him and Lut to the land wherein We had placed Our blessings for the worlds. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and [Isaac's son] Jacob as an additional gift and caused all of them to be righteous men, 72 And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge, and saved him from a people who acted villainously and were certainly wicked and disobedient. 74 And We caused him to enter into Our mercy; verily he was of the righteous. 75
