The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
