A company of the former peoples 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
