A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
