The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the great event comes to pass, 1 Which is bound to happen undoubtedly -- 2 (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; 3 When the earth is shaken with convulsion 4 And the mountains are crumbled, crumbled. 5 and become a dust, scattered, 6 And ye will be three kinds: 7 So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands), Who will be those on the Right Hand? (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise). 8 And there shall be such as will have lost themselves in evil: oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil! 9 The third to the fore shall be the foremost. 10 These will be those Nearest to Allah: 11 In gardens of delight; 12 A throng of the ancients, 13 and a few from later times. 14 On thrones woven [with ornament], 15 Reclining face to face. 16 There shall go round unto them youths ever-young. 17 Cups and decanters, beakers full of sparkling wine, 18 by which their minds will not be clouded and which will not make them drunk; 19 And fruit of what they select 20 and the meat of any bird that they may desire; 21 And companions with big beautiful eyes 22 Like unto hidden pearls, 23 A recompense for that which they have been working. 24 There they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, 25 Only a saying: "Peace, peace." 26 Those on the Right, how fortunate are those on the Right! 27 Amid thornless lote-trees, 28 And clusters of banana plants. 29 and amid the extended shade 30 And water gushing, 31 And plenty of fruits. 32 unfailing, unforbidden, 33 And on couches or thrones, raised high. 34 and their spouses We shall have brought them into being afresh, 35 And made them virgins, 36 The beloved of their husbands, of one age. 37 For those of the right hand. 38
