The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
