The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
