The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 but We see it near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 But not so the worshippers 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
