The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all those on earth. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
