The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 stay away from sins 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
