He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him thou attendest 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 and in awe [of God] 9 you pay him no heed. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 How We pour water in showers 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 Olives and dates, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 and his consort and his children; 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
