Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-A’in-Sad. (* Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah and to whomever He reveals know their precise meanings.) 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he called to his Lord inwardly, 3 He submitted, “O my Lord – my bones have become weak and old age shines forth from my head, and O my Lord, I have never been disappointed in my prayer to you.” 4 Indeed, I fear my kinsmen who will succeed me, for my wife is barren. Grant me a kinsman 5 Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased. 6 [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." 7 He said: O my Lord! in what wise shall there be for me a boy, whereas my wife hath been barren, and surely have reached an age of extreme degree? 8 He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing. 9 He said: my Lord appoint for me a sign. Allah said: thy sign is that thou shalt not speak unto mankind for three nights, while sound. 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 O Yahya! hold fast the book. And We vouchsafed unto him wisdom, while yet a child. 12 And compassion from Our presence, and purity; and he was devout, 13 And was good to his parents and not forceful, nor disobedient. 14 And Peace be unto him the day he was born and the day he dieth and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
