Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
