The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 and by the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
