The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 you strive in various ways. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 They do not expect any reward 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
