He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And hath fear, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And We made corn grow, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruit and grass - 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And his mother and his father 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 and covered by darkness. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
