The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
