a good many of olden times, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
