The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
