The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and all those on earth. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
