The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Indeed your efforts differ. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 They do not expect any reward 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
