The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 except those that pray, 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
