Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
