A company of the former peoples 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
