Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 by the even and the odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 enter My Paradise! 30
