Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
