Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Join My servants. 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
