He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 You pay full attention, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 In honored books, 13 exalted, purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And We made corn grow, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 mother, father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
