[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
