The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 purify your garments; 4 And pollution shun. 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and who still desires more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
