Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
